Mask for a Headdress
June 12-13-14
cost $420
In this class we will carve a forehead mask, traditionally part of a type of headdress.
We will supply a piece of alder and a pattern for the mask.
You will be responsible for bringing everything else needed. Carving tools, pencils (we suggest a .05 mechanical pencil, plus a pencil that will work on wet wood), flexible ruler (12-16”), tracing paper, blue masking tape, scissors, a small carpenter's square (6”x12”), a small saw, like a Japanese pull saw.
The minimum amount of carving tools needed to complete the project are:
A straight adz
Two crooked knives
Straight knife
It would be helpful to have a lip adz, as well as one or two more crooked knives. These will make the job more efficient, but are not required.
For examples you can look at Kestrel Tool https://www.kestreltool.com/store
I recommend them for quality tools.
For a straight knife I also recommend the Swedish Laminated Steel Knife Blades from Crazy Crow Trading Post, if you are willing to make your own handle. At $34.05 you can’t beat it, Product No. 5428-102-325 https://www.crazycrow.com/swedish-laminated-knife-blades/swedish-laminated-steel-blades-bearcat-3.25in
If you need more guidance, email me and I’ll try to help.

Rattle
July 17-18-19
cost $420
In this class we will carve a rattle. It will have a face, carved in shallow relief on one side and a formline design carved on the other side.
We will supply two pieces of Alaska yellow cedar and a pattern for each side. We will also have small beads to use inside the rattle or you can bring whatever small noisemakers you want to put inside.

Also, for this class we will be doing formline carving. If your closeup vision is good, that's great, but I always use an Optivisor. Search for "magnifying visors" or "headlamp magnifier" online, they are available through craft and woodworking stores, electronics repair, Harbor Freight and others. There are a wide range of types and prices, based on your needs. Keep in mind: the higher the magnification, the smaller your field of view. I recommend 2x-3x as a comfortable range for carving. If you don't wear prescription glasses, you can even just buy drugstore reading glasses with 2x-3x strength.

Open Class
August 14-15-16
cost $390
An “Open Class” means you may work on a project of your choice or bring back a project you worked on in previous classes. You can get help starting something new, finish a project you’re stuck on, work on painting, knife finishing or designing. The project will need to be appropriate for a classroom setting, not too big, can be worked on without special tools, etc.
We ask that when you register, be sure to state what project you will bring to work on. If I think it may be a problem I will contact you to see if we can make it work.
You will be responsible for bringing everything you need to complete your chosen project: wood, tools, pencil, ruler, tracing paper, tape, scissors, etc. I have some things here for student use: bandsaw, drill press, router, chainsaw.
In last year's open classes we had a mix of new and longtime students. Some were beginners and some were advanced carvers. Students worked on many different projects: masks, bentwood boxes, rattles, formline design and painting, canoe paddles, and brought unfinished projects to complete.
We hope to see you in one of this year's classes and we thank everyone for sharing in the experience.
Below are examples of a forehead mask and rattle. The actual patterns for the class will be similar but not exactly the same and you will have the opportunity to add your own personal touch to the designs in class.
